Scavengers of the Mutant World (1988) takes you to a post-apocalyptic wasteland where radiation has turned most life forms into something between a potato and a death machine. Your goal? Survive, rebuild civilization, and maybe find some edible fungus. With its roguelike mechanics and chunky pixel art, it’s a brutal mix of strategy and gallows humor. Your party of mutants might have telepathy, extra limbs, or just a bad attitude. Every run feels like a grim but strangely cozy camping trip in nuclear hell.
Want a seriously challenging RPG? Like random generated worlds? Scavengers OTMW offers all this and more. Best played by gamers with somewhat masochistic tendencies, as making any kind of real progress takes true grit and a good dose of luck. The game isn't exactly pretty either. You start with minimal directions and no crew and have to figure pretty much everything out for yourself... if you can survive long enough. In its day, I could never beat it. Are you up to the challenge?
