Shannara (1995, DOS) adapts the beloved fantasy world into a point-and-click adventure steeped in prophecy, magic, and earnest heroism. Drawing from the novels by Terry Brooks, it invites players to explore lush settings rendered in detailed, painterly backgrounds while unraveling a story of destiny and ancient evil. The puzzles lean toward the thoughtful rather than the punishing, and the narrative carries a sweeping, epic tone. Conversations matter, exploration is rewarded, and the atmosphere feels suitably grand. It’s a slower burn, more about immersion than spectacle, but if you’re willing to lean into its high-fantasy drama, you’ll find a journey that feels both classic and heartfelt.
Quandary: "Perhaps I am being too harsh. Other players may well disagree with my assessment of the puzzles, and there are many components that make up a good game. Shannara does have wonderful graphics, an involving and absorbing story which I enjoyed, and it even provides a significant moral dilemma, which I enjoyed less you will have to play the game if you want to know why. And, despite my feeling a little let down by some aspects of the puzzles, which I am prepared to concede might be partly due to my expectations being too high, I still found it to be an entertaining game and well worth playing."
