Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is a 1991 mystery adventure that attempts to recreate the experience of investigating a Holmes story rather than simply watching one unfold. Players examine clues, consult newspapers and reference materials, interview suspects, and follow leads in an effort to solve a series of cases. The game famously uses filmed sequences and a large collection of supporting material, giving the investigation a distinctive multimedia presentation. Success depends less on reflexes and more on remembering details, connecting seemingly unrelated information, and resisting the temptation to accuse the first suspicious person you meet. It captures the appeal of detective fiction surprisingly well: every clue matters, but not every clue is immediately useful. Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is best played with a notebook nearby and a healthy suspicion of everyone. It may not make you as brilliant as Holmes, but it will certainly make you feel busier.

Retro gamer collector's corner:

A sequel to the game was also released in 1992 called Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective Vol. II with three new cases to be solved. A third entry, with three new cases, was also released.

In 2012, a Kickstarter campaign was launched by David Marsh and his company Zojoi, LLC to help fund a high resolution and remastered version of the Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective Adventure Mysteries. Even though the Kickstarter was unsuccessful, the remastered version was still released.
