Siege

Siege is a 1992 DOS strategy game centered on medieval warfare and the difficult business of taking fortified positions. Players command armies and must consider troop placement, attacks, defenses, and the strengths of different units while attempting to overcome enemy fortifications. The subject naturally lends itself to methodical gameplay, since charging directly at a well-defended castle is rarely the most brilliant military plan. Siege rewards planning and patience, with battles developing through careful tactical decisions rather than pure reflexes. The medieval setting gives the game plenty of atmosphere, especially for players who enjoy castles, armies, and the occasional siege engine. It captures the appeal of commanding a battlefield without requiring the player to manage an enormous empire. Siege is a neat example of tactical strategy from an era when computer games were perfectly happy to make you wait while your carefully prepared assault slowly turned into a disaster.
