Soccer Kid is a colorful 1995 platform game in which football becomes an unlikely weapon against a rather unusual collection of villains. The player controls a young soccer enthusiast who travels through various locations, using his trusty ball to attack enemies, activate mechanisms, and overcome obstacles. The central gimmick gives the game a distinctive identity: kicking a football is not merely something you do between matches, but apparently a perfectly legitimate solution to almost every problem. The platforming combines running, jumping, timing, and ball control, with increasingly demanding stages testing both reflexes and patience. Soccer Kid has a playful presentation and plenty of personality, making it easy to appreciate even when a difficult section starts becoming irritating. The concept is wonderfully simple and suitably British in spirit. Why carry a sword when you can solve an international crisis with a football and a surprisingly powerful kick?
