By the time Space Quest 3: The Pirates of Pestulon arrived in 1989, Roger Wilco had become something of a professional survivor. This time he starts the game stranded in a garbage freighter, which honestly suits his career trajectory perfectly. The story involves evil software pirates (yes, literally) who plan to enslave programmers and dominate the galaxy with questionable code quality. Sierra’s updated SCI engine gives the game brighter graphics and a smoother interface, meaning you’ll die in prettier environments than before. The humor is sharper too, with plenty of jabs at the computer industry of the late ’80s. Between sneaking through high-tech bases and piloting suspiciously unsafe spacecraft, Roger continues to prove that courage isn’t necessary when blind luck and bad decisions can get the job done just as well.
