Toys for Bob developed the DOS science fiction adventure game Star Control in 1990. Star Control is currently NOT abandonware, runs on DOS and can be played in a top down perspective in single player, multiplayer (same or split screen) modes.

The game featured the basic Spacewar!-style combat engine and wraparound screen, Mêlée (as it was called due to the close combat involved), as well as a strategic game engine with a three-dimensional cluster of stars as the terrain.
