Stonekeep

Stonekeep is a first-person fantasy dungeon crawler with an appropriately unpleasant central premise: the kingdom has been attacked, evil has taken over, and you are expected to clean up the mess. Naturally, nobody mentions overtime pay. The game combines exploration, combat, puzzles and character development, sending you through dark corridors filled with monsters, traps and enough suspicious-looking doors to make you question every architectural decision ever made. Its presentation was a major attraction at the time, with digitized characters and atmospheric environments giving the adventure a more cinematic feel than many traditional dungeon crawlers. Combat is real-time, while magic and equipment add some welcome variety. Stonekeep can occasionally be clunky, but its gloomy atmosphere and theatrical personality give it plenty of charm. It feels like a dungeon crawl that decided it wanted to be a fantasy movie as well.

Stonekeep review

Computer Games Magazine (1995): "Few companies always make excellent, high quality games, but Interplay certainly is one of them. They have done it again with their latest addition, Stonekeep, an action/RPG similar to Dungeon Master or Ultima Underworld. Interplay claims that they took three years to make this game, and I believe it. The gameplay, music, and especially the gameplay are excellent."

Retro gamer collector's corner:

The Oath of Stonekeep, a novel set in the world of Stonekeep, was written by Troy Denning and published 1999 by Berkley Boulevard Books.

Stonekeep was originally released for the PC DOS and Windows 95 in 1995, packaged in an elaborate gravestone-style illustrated box and came with a white hardback novella Thera Awakening, coauthored by Steve Jacksonand David L. Pulver (all rights of the novel went to Interplay). The CD-ROM also included a file called "muffins.txt" which contained a recipe for "Tim Cain's Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffins".
