The Immortal

The Immortal is a darkly comic action RPG that drops you into a dungeon where survival depends on quick reflexes, exploration, and a willingness to get killed in surprisingly inventive ways. You play as an unnamed wizard searching for a mysterious immortal, battling monsters, solving puzzles, and generally discovering that every suspicious-looking corridor probably has a nasty surprise waiting behind it. Combat is deliberately awkward at first, giving the game a slightly theatrical feel: you learn enemy patterns, dodge attacks, and hope your wizard remembers which end of the sword is supposed to hurt the other fellow. The isometric perspective gives the whole adventure a distinctive look, while the grim atmosphere is occasionally punctured by sly humor. It is challenging, strange, and occasionally unfair, but that is part of its old-school charm.
