The Typing of the Dead is a distinctive video game, essentially a typing adaptation of the classic rail shooter arcade game, The House of the Dead. Initially debuting in 1999 as an arcade machine, it later became available on other platforms as well. In The Typing of the Dead, players wield a keyboard to dispatch approaching hordes of zombies and other creatures by typing words or phrases displayed on the screen. Each word or phrase is linked to a particular adversary, and accurately typing it prompts the player's character to launch an attack, ultimately vanquishing the corresponding foe.

The Typing of the Dead review
Computer Gaming World (2002): "This game is incredibly addictive. The plot doesn’t make all that much sense. I never quite figured out why the zombies were there or whom I was avenging or what happened to my coworkers by the end of the game. But ultimately, I didn’t really care. Who needs an excuse to shoot up some zombies? And you don’t have to figure out who the bad guys are, they’re easily identified by the words and phrases that pop up across their chests."
