Abandonware DOS title

Times of Lore

Times of Lore is an abandoned action RPG designed by Chris Roberts, developed and released by Origin Systems in 1989 for DOS and many more 8 bit and 16 bit platforms. Compared to Ultima (the much more popular franchise also by Origin) Times of Lore is a washed down RPG, more similar to a NES game. In fact, Roberts was inspired by The Legend of Zelda.

Times of Lore review

Computer Gaming World - Issue 55 (1989): "Times of Lore is basically a beginner's computer role-playing game. The game is very easy to learn and play: character creation is simple, monsters are few, conversations are menu-driven, and actions are controlled from an icon-based menu on the screen. Unlike other CRPG's, experience gained does not advance the character in levels (there aren't any). It is strictly used as an indication of how well you're doing.
Overall, Times of Lore is a neat and simple game. It plays fast, avoids the complexities of more sophisticated CRPG's, tells a story, has nice graphics, and a decent (if a little abrupt) ending."
