Then there’s Martian Dreams, the Ultima game where you travel to Mars in the 19th century with none other than Sigmund Freud and Nikola Tesla. Yes, it’s as delightfully bizarre as it sounds. Instead of Britannia, you’re exploring a dusty red planet full of Victorian science-fiction charm, complete with psychic phenomena and retrofuturist gadgets. It’s equal parts pulp novel and RPG, and while the mechanics are familiar Ultima fare, the setting gives it a wonderfully weird flavor. Who needs dragons when you have Martian plants that invade your mind? It’s quirky, imaginative, and easily one of the series’ most unusual detours.
