Ultima 8: The Lost Vale

The Lost Vale is the great “what if” of the Ultima series. Developed as an expansion to Pagan but never officially released, it became the stuff of legend. Players were meant to explore new lands, uncover lore, and maybe forgive the game’s obsession with deadly platforming. Alas, the expansion was cancelled, and the disks were lost to time, turning it into an almost mythical artifact among fans. Was it brilliant? Was it mediocre? Nobody knows for sure. What we do know is that every Ultima fan secretly wishes someone would unearth a dusty prototype in a forgotten warehouse.

Ultima VIII: The Lost Vale is a cancelled add-on for Ultima VIII: Pagan. A single Lost Vale game box surfaced in October 2005, and was confirmed to be genuine soon afterwards. It was auctioned in eBay for US$1923. Some low-resolution scans of the box are located on the web.
