Vampyr: Talisman of Invocation is an obscure fantasy adventure built around exploration, combat, and the hunt for magical objects. The setting has all the ingredients you might expect from a late-1980s computer fantasy game: mysterious locations, hostile creatures, spells, treasure, and a hero who apparently has excellent reasons for wandering into places sensible people would avoid. Progress depends on exploring carefully and working out how the various pieces of the world fit together. The graphics are basic, but they provide enough atmosphere to make the environments feel mysterious rather than merely empty. Combat and resource management add a little tension to the exploration, while the search for the titular talisman provides a clear sense of purpose. Vampyr: Talisman of Invocation is very much a product of its time, with a certain roughness that modern games have polished away. For fans of obscure DOS fantasy adventures, however, that rough edge is part of the attraction.
This is a classic, and one of the best indie made RPGs I played when I was a kid. I highly recommend giving it a shot. It's a bit rough around the edges and the humor leans a bit towards in-jokes, but I love the original ideas they had for the mechanics and the refreshingly well designed world. They put a ton of work and love into it, and I wish they had done a sequel.
