Van Buren (Fallout 3)

Van Buren is the codename for the ambitious Fallout 3 project that Black Isle Studios was developing before Interplay cancelled it, leaving behind one of gaming's great “what if?” stories. It was intended to continue the classic Fallout tradition with a post-apocalyptic role-playing experience featuring exploration, tactical combat, dialogue choices, faction politics, and a large world to investigate. Although the finished game never existed, surviving design documents, concept material, and prototypes reveal an intriguing direction for the series. The project promised a darker and more reactive adventure, with player decisions influencing relationships and the wider world. Instead of becoming another finished chapter, Van Buren became something rather unusual: a game remembered largely through what it might have been. For Fallout enthusiasts, that unfinished status is part of the fascination. It represents a fork in the series' history where things could have developed very differently, making Van Buren one of the most interesting lost RPG projects of its generation.
