Veil of Darkness

Veil of Darkness is a gothic action adventure that mixes exploration, puzzles, combat, and a healthy supply of supernatural misery. You find yourself stranded in a remote region dominated by vampires, monsters, and other things that make ordinary travel insurance seem rather inadequate. The game gives you a sizeable world to explore, with characters to meet, objects to collect, and mysteries to unravel as you try to discover what has happened. Combat is real-time, but solving puzzles and understanding the environment are equally important, so charging at every problem with a weapon is rarely the best solution. The atmosphere is one of its greatest strengths, with dark landscapes and a suitably ominous tone throughout. Veil of Darkness has an old-fashioned adventure structure that rewards curiosity and careful exploration. It can be demanding, but that sense of isolation and discovery makes the journey worthwhile. For fans of gothic computer adventures, it remains a particularly atmospheric DOS-era curiosity.
