Wing Commander Academy takes the combat system of the famous series and strips away much of the campaign structure, allowing players to concentrate on what they presumably came for in the first place: flying spacecraft and blowing things up. Instead of following a lengthy cinematic storyline, you can create and customize missions, selecting ships, opponents, objectives, and other parameters. This makes the game feel more like a playground for Wing Commander fans than a conventional sequel. It is particularly enjoyable for experimenting with different scenarios, whether you want a straightforward dogfight or something considerably more chaotic. The Kilrathi are still around, naturally, because apparently nobody in the Confederation has considered asking them to leave. The graphics and sound have aged, but the flexibility remains appealing. Wing Commander Academy is best appreciated as a sandbox for space combat enthusiasts who want control over the battle rather than another carefully scripted military campaign.
