Witchaven

Witchaven is a dark fantasy first-person action game filled with castles, monsters, weapons, magic, and enough gloomy corridors to make you wonder whether the architect had something against windows. You play a warrior battling supernatural enemies through maze-like environments, using swords and other weapons alongside magical abilities. Combat is straightforward but satisfying, with different enemies demanding different approaches and plenty of opportunities to charge into situations that would be better handled cautiously. The game's atmosphere is one of its strongest features, mixing medieval imagery with the chunky 3D technology of the mid-1990s. It clearly belongs to the generation of shooters inspired by games such as Doom while adding a stronger fantasy flavor. Witchaven is not subtle, but subtlety was hardly the main selling point of the era. If you like your first-person shooters filled with skeletons, spells, and enormous weapons, it delivers the goods with admirable enthusiasm.
