Abandonware DOS title

Games part of the Grand Theft Auto series

The Grand Theft Auto series began in 1997 with GTA, a top-down crime sandbox where players stole cars, caused chaos, and climbed the criminal ladder. Its sequel, GTA 2 (1999), refined the formula with gang factions and a futuristic setting.

The series exploded with GTA III (2001), introducing a fully 3D open world that revolutionized gaming. Vice City (2002) and San Andreas (2004) expanded scope, adding style, storytelling, and vast worlds inspired by Miami and California.

From the start, GTA drew criticism for glorifying crime, violence, and satire of American culture. Vice City faced backlash over stereotypes, San Andreas for its hidden “Hot Coffee” mod, and nearly every release stirred debates about games influencing behavior. Ironically, the controversy only boosted sales.
