Abandonware DOS favorite games from the 1990s
Throughout my history with video games, many titles could claim the spot of “the best,” or at least my personal favorite at one point or another.
Creating a definitive ranking is nearly impossible—and this list certainly doesn’t pretend to be one. Some of these games became true milestones in their genre, or even in the history of gaming itself. Others are far more obscure, barely remembered by most, yet deeply ingrained in my memory thanks to the time, place, and emotions associated with them. I’ve tried to include every game I could recall, leaving out only those I’ve never actually played (and there are more than a few of those).
A special mention goes to a few titles I not only loved, but actually finished—no small achievement in an era when games were rarely forgiving. Ultima V pulled me into a living, breathing world governed by virtue and consequence, demanding patience, note-taking, and genuine commitment. Civilization was a different kind of obsession: a quiet, all-consuming spiral of “just one more turn” that taught me how entire histories could unfold on a single screen. And Golden Axe, while simpler in structure, delivered pure, unforgettable arcade energy—its fantasy setting, booming sound effects, and co-op brawling etched permanently into my memory.
I believe—or at least hope—that this list will resonate with fellow old-school gamers: those who grew up with loading screens, pixelated dreams, and the patience required to read a manual before playing.
