Black Tiger is a side-scrolling action game packed with monsters, treasure and enough medieval violence to make a quiet afternoon in the countryside seem considerably less attractive. The player controls a heavily armed warrior battling through dangerous stages filled with enemies, traps and increasingly unpleasant creatures. Combat is immediate and rewards learning enemy patterns, while collecting upgrades can make the hero considerably more effective. The game has the unmistakable arcade philosophy of the period: keep moving, attack quickly and try not to die before discovering what is waiting around the next corner. Its visuals are colourful and energetic, while the fantasy setting provides plenty of excuses for oversized enemies and dramatic battles. It is straightforward, challenging and occasionally brutal, but that is part of the fun. Nobody promised that being a medieval hero would involve reasonable working hours.
