By 1989, Dragon’s Lair had already become legendary in arcades, so its DOS port had a lot to live up to. Spoiler: it couldn’t quite match the arcade’s gorgeous laserdisc animation. Still, the spirit of Dirk the Daring, the hapless knight, shines through. Instead of crisp cartoons, you got clunky graphics and brutal quick-time gameplay. Yet the humor, danger, and sheer absurdity of Dirk’s misadventures remained. It’s less “interactive movie” here and more “trial-and-error marathon,” but that’s part of the charm. If nothing else, it reminded PC gamers that knights could be heroic and incredibly clumsy at the same time.
