There was a time when digitized sprites and surprisingly loud crowd noise felt like cutting-edge sports science, and FIFA Soccer 96 proudly lived in that moment. The big selling point was 3D stadiums, which in 1995 meant “we added some angles and everyone lost their minds.” It still plays a decent game of football, though expect goalkeepers to occasionally behave like they’ve just remembered they left the oven on. The commentary was repetitive enough to tattoo itself onto your brain, yet somehow charming. It’s fast, slightly chaotic, and wonderfully earnest. You don’t play it for realism; you play it to relive that era when scoring from midfield felt not only possible, but morally correct.
