Inca is a strange hybrid that feels like three different games stitched together by sheer ambition. One moment you’re managing resources and navigating an empire, the next you’re solving adventure-style puzzles, and suddenly you’re thrown into real-time space combat that wouldn’t feel out of place in a sci-fi sim. Set in an alternate history where the Inca developed advanced technology, the premise alone is bold enough to carry the experience. Not all of its systems are perfectly balanced, and transitions between gameplay styles can feel abrupt, but there’s something admirable about how much it tries to do. The visuals are richly illustrated, the music leans heavily into atmosphere, and the overall tone is serious without being dull. Inca isn’t easy to categorize, but that’s exactly why it remains memorable decades later.
