The Neuromancer video game, released in 1988 by Interplay Productions, is an adventure/role-playing game loosely based on William Gibson's seminal cyberpunk novel Neuromancer (1984). It combines elements of science fiction, hacking, and RPG-style exploration in a digital world, set in a dystopian future dominated by artificial intelligence, corporations, and cyberspace. The game was released on multiple platforms, including the Commodore 64, Apple II, Amiga, and DOS.
How to play Neuromancer
Game modes: single-player
In Neuromancer you’ll need to navigate both the real world and cyberspace to progress, and there are plenty of opportunities to upgrade your skills and gear.
Here are some basic gameplay tips:
- In the game’s starting area, Chatsubo, talk to every character. Conversations often yield critical information or hints about what you need to do next. Sometimes they even offer jobs or connections.
- Inventory management is essential. You’ll find various objects scattered around that can be useful or essential later on. Make sure to pick up items, as you’ll need many for progressing through the game.
- You need credits for almost everything, including upgrades and software. Initially, get jobs from people at the bar or by doing odd jobs around town. Over time, you’ll also be able to make money by hacking into databases.
- As soon as you have some money, focus on upgrading your cyberdeck and software, as these will give you more power and flexibility in cyberspace. It’s especially important to have good ICE-breaking programs to hack through defenses.
