Powermonger takes the god-game formula of Populous and gives it teeth. Instead of playing benevolent deity, you’re more like a slightly cranky warlord, sending little soldiers to raid villages and expand your empire. The joy comes from watching the world react—townspeople surrender, resist, or just carry on farming while you wreak havoc nearby. The isometric perspective feels both grand and claustrophobic, depending on how badly your campaign is going. Released in 1992, it was ahead of its time in ambition, even if the controls sometimes make you feel like you’re herding cats. Brutal, quirky, and oddly hypnotic, it’s a cult classic.
