Romance of the Three Kingdoms 3: Dragon of Destiny continues the series' detailed treatment of ancient Chinese history, giving players control over rulers attempting to unite a fractured land through warfare, diplomacy, administration, and clever political maneuvering. The game expands the strategic possibilities with a broad range of officers and governmental decisions, making it possible to approach the campaign in several different ways. Recruiting talented commanders is important, but keeping them loyal and properly supplied is equally crucial. Battles therefore form only one part of a much larger political struggle. The historical setting provides a rich backdrop, while the open-ended strategy ensures that no two campaigns have to unfold in quite the same way. Dragon of Destiny is a serious strategy game with one wonderfully simple lesson: if you want to rule an empire, make sure your generals are both competent and reasonably fond of you.
