Shadow of Yserbius is a 1993 online role-playing game set in a fantasy world filled with dungeons, monsters, treasure, and enough corridors to make a cartographer nervous. Players create characters, explore dangerous areas, fight enemies, collect equipment, and gradually develop their abilities. The game was designed around online multiplayer, giving its dungeon-crawling mechanics a social dimension that was still relatively unusual at the time. Its first-person perspective and RPG systems create a classic dungeon-adventure atmosphere, while cooperation and competition with other players add another layer to exploration. Shadow of Yserbius is a fascinating example of early online gaming, from an era when connecting with other players was far less effortless than it is today. There were no endless matchmaking queues or instant downloads; simply getting into the virtual dungeon could feel like an adventure. Once inside, however, the monsters were waiting patiently.
