Silent Service is a 1985 submarine simulation that puts players in command of an American submarine during World War II. The game combines navigation, sonar, targeting, torpedo attacks, and tactical decision-making, creating a surprisingly detailed representation of underwater combat for its era. Players must locate enemy ships, estimate their movement, position the submarine correctly, and launch attacks without giving away their own location. The tension comes from the fact that much of the action happens beneath the surface, where information is limited and mistakes can be expensive. Patience is essential; this is not a game where charging toward the enemy with guns blazing is considered sophisticated naval doctrine. Silent Service helped establish the submarine simulation as a serious computer-game genre. Its graphics may look modest today, but the underlying concept remains compelling: hide beneath the waves, listen carefully, and hope the other captain is having a worse day than you are.
