Striker is an early football game that captures the basic appeal of the sport while squeezing it into the limited technology available on home computers of the mid-1980s. Matches are fast, simple and focused on the fundamentals: passing, shooting, positioning and, naturally, trying to put the ball into the opponent’s goal more often than they do. The presentation is primitive by modern standards, but there is something charming about seeing a whole football match reduced to a handful of sprites and a pitch. The game is easy to pick up, yet getting consistently good results requires some practice. Striker belongs to that wonderful generation of sports games where the imagination fills in the gaps left by the graphics. You may not get television-quality commentary, but at least nobody will spend twenty minutes discussing VAR.
