The Games: Winter Challenge takes the multi-event sports formula onto snow and ice, offering a collection of winter competitions where timing and control are considerably more important than having warm fingers. Players compete in different events, each demanding its own approach, from maintaining speed to handling awkward turns and avoiding the sort of mistakes that look hilarious when somebody else makes them. The game has the straightforward structure typical of early sports compilations, with events that are easy to understand but harder to perform consistently. The graphics are modest, yet they provide enough information to follow the action and appreciate the differences between disciplines. It works particularly well as a competitive game, where friendly rivalry can quickly turn into accusations about cheating, controllers, and suspiciously slippery keyboards. For a DOS-era winter sports experience, it offers a surprisingly entertaining collection of challenges.
