Thexder is a wonderfully odd hybrid of shooting and exploration, built around a small transforming robot that can switch between walking and flying forms. That transformation is not merely a visual gimmick: it is essential for navigating the maze-like environments and reaching places that would otherwise remain frustratingly out of reach. Enemies arrive from all directions, so staying still is rarely a wise career choice. The game has a distinctly Japanese arcade sensibility, but its computer-oriented design gives it a more thoughtful rhythm than a pure shoot-em-up. The graphics are primitive today, yet the mechanical idea remains clever and surprisingly satisfying. Thexder feels like someone asked, “What if a robot could turn into a tiny fighter jet?” and then refused to stop until the question became a complete game.
