Times of Lore is an action-oriented fantasy adventure that sends the player into a medieval world filled with monsters, villages, quests and plenty of reasons to keep a sword within easy reach. Exploration is central to the experience, with towns and wilderness areas offering characters to meet, information to discover and problems to solve. Combat is more immediate than in traditional turn-based RPGs, giving the game a lively pace while still retaining the sense of wandering through a larger fantasy world. The presentation is colorful for its era, and the top-down perspective makes navigation relatively intuitive. Times of Lore strikes a nice balance between action and adventure, making it approachable without becoming simplistic. It has the charm of a fantasy novel translated into a computer game, complete with heroic errands, dangerous creatures and the timeless RPG tradition of accepting a quest before asking whether anyone has remembered to pay you.
