Transarctica presents a wonderfully bleak vision of the future in which Earth has frozen over and surviving civilization depends on enormous trains crossing the icy wilderness. The player commands one of these mobile strongholds, managing resources, trading, exploring, and dealing with rival factions while trying to survive in an environment that makes winter holidays look positively tropical. The train is more than transportation; it is effectively your home, economy, and military base rolled into one. Strategic decisions matter because fuel, supplies, and manpower are never infinite. The game combines exploration and management with a distinctive science-fiction atmosphere that feels strangely convincing despite its eccentric premise. Transarctica has plenty of personality, and its bleak setting gives every successful journey a satisfying sense of achievement. It is not the sort of train simulator where you sit back and admire the scenery. Here, the scenery is frozen wasteland, the passengers are worried, and stopping for fuel is considerably more complicated than pulling into the nearest station.
