As sequels go, Serpent Isle is less “more of the same” and more “everything is different, good luck.” Shipwrecked on a strange new land, you’ll deal with political intrigue, bizarre magical phenomena, and a storyline that loves to throw curveballs. The writing is sharper, the tone darker, and the sense of mystery palpable. Of course, the same fiddly inventory system persists, so expect to spend half the adventure sorting your backpack. Still, this is where the series leaned heavily into drama, with shocking twists and characters you actually care about. A worthy continuation, and sometimes even stronger than its famous predecessor.
