Welltris takes the familiar falling-block formula and turns it sideways, quite literally. Released in 1989, this Tetris-inspired puzzle game presents a three-dimensional well into which pieces fall from the edges. Instead of simply building a stack from the bottom, players must think about several surfaces at once, making the familiar concept considerably more demanding. The objective remains simple: arrange pieces to complete lines and prevent the playing area from becoming hopelessly clogged. In practice, however, the extra dimension creates a constant battle between planning ahead and discovering that your supposedly clever arrangement has just ruined everything. The game is visually distinctive and rewards spatial awareness more than lightning reflexes. It is a fascinating example of how designers could take a familiar arcade formula and reinvent it without abandoning the basic appeal. Fans of puzzle games will find Welltris clever, challenging, and just frustrating enough to encourage the classic promise: One more game, then I am done.
