Wing Commander Academy takes the combat system of the famous series and strips away much of the campaign structure, allowing players to concentrate on what they presumably came for in the first place: flying spacecraft and blowing things up. Instead of following a lengthy cinematic storyline, you can create and customize missions, selecting ships, opponents, objectives, and other parameters. This makes the game feel more like a playground for Wing Commander fans than a conventional sequel. The Kilrathi are still around, naturally, because apparently nobody in the Confederation has considered asking them to leave. The graphics and sound have aged, but the flexibility remains appealing.
