Raiden is a 1994 DOS conversion of the classic vertical shoot 'em up, putting players in control of a powerful fighter facing waves of enemies and increasingly dangerous bosses. The formula is wonderfully direct: move, shoot, collect power-ups, and try not to collide with anything moving toward you at alarming speed. Different weapons and upgrades allow the spacecraft to become progressively more powerful, while the screen gradually fills with enemy fire. Raiden is challenging without losing the immediate appeal that makes arcade shooters so addictive. Memorizing patterns and learning when to move are just as important as quick reflexes. The game delivers the timeless satisfaction of surviving another wave and reaching another boss, followed by the equally timeless realization that the boss is considerably less interested in your survival than you are.
