If you ever wondered what driving a luxury sports car felt like in the late 80s, Test Drive delivers that fantasy with all the pixelated swagger you could ask for. This pioneering racing game doesn’t just throw you on a track; it hands you the keys to a Ferrari or Lamborghini and politely reminds you that police cars exist purely to ruin your day. The sense of speed is impressive for its time, even if the roadside scenery looks like it was painted during a coffee break. It’s less about winning and more about surviving long enough not to get fined, crash, or both. In short, it’s a glorious mix of ambition and barely controlled chaos.
How to play Test Drive
Game modes: single-player
In Test Drive, your goal is to successfully complete a series of driving challenges on a winding mountain road while avoiding collisions and evading police.
Keyboard controls: A - Z: gear shift; arrow keys: steer left right, accelerate, decelerate.
- Choose the Right Car: If you're a beginner, start with a car with balanced handling instead of maximum speed.
- Master Gear Shifting: If you’re using manual transmission, learn to shift gears smoothly. Watch the tachometer to avoid over-revving the engine.
- Brake Before Turns: Anticipate sharp turns and reduce speed beforehand rather than slamming the brakes mid-turn.
- Use the Radar: Keep an eye on the radar to detect police. Once you spot them, lower your speed immediately.
- Avoid Risks: Don’t drive at max speed all the time. Controlled driving is better than crashing and losing time.
