Total Eclipse is an early 3D action game that gives the player a first-person view of a mysterious environment filled with exploration, hazards, and rather intimidating architecture. Its polygonal visuals were technically ambitious for the period, creating a sense of depth that was still something of a novelty on home computers. The player moves through an environment where navigation and survival are equally important, with the limited technology sometimes making the world feel appropriately alien. The controls and visuals can appear primitive today, but there is genuine charm in seeing an early attempt to build a convincing three-dimensional adventure before hardware made such things commonplace. Total Eclipse rewards curiosity, although players may occasionally find themselves wondering where they are supposed to go next. That is part of its character. It feels like a glimpse into the future imagined by developers who were working with machines that were still firmly living in the present.
