Where in Europe is Carmen Sandiego? sends players across the continent in pursuit of Carmen and her increasingly slippery gang of thieves. The basic formula is wonderfully effective: travel from one European location to another, collect clues, identify the culprit, and work out where the trail is heading next. Geography becomes your greatest weapon, while knowledge of European cities, landmarks, languages, and political details helps separate useful evidence from deliberate misdirection. The game manages to turn what might have been a dry geography lesson into a proper detective chase, complete with the satisfaction of finally closing the case. Its graphics are obviously dated, but the information and puzzle structure remain the real stars. There is also something delightfully old-fashioned about travelling around Europe from a DOS prompt, long before smartphones could simply tell you where everything was.
