SimLife is a 1992 life simulation that allows players to create and manipulate ecosystems, experimenting with plants, animals, environments, genetics, and evolutionary development. Instead of controlling a single character, you establish the conditions under which entire populations can develop and then observe what happens. Different species interact with one another, environmental factors influence survival, and genetic changes can produce unexpected results. The game's open-ended design encourages experimentation rather than following a fixed storyline or objective. You can attempt to create a balanced ecosystem, or you can conduct increasingly questionable experiments and watch nature deal with the consequences. SimLife is one of the more unusual entries in the Maxis catalog because it turns biology into a sandbox. It can be educational, fascinating, and occasionally hilarious when your carefully engineered ecosystem collapses for reasons you absolutely should have anticipated. Evolution, apparently, does not appreciate bad management.
