The Ultimate Doom expands the classic demon-blasting formula with an additional episode and plenty more reasons to wonder why opening that suspicious door seemed like a good idea. The core gameplay remains wonderfully direct: move quickly, collect weapons, manage ammunition and eliminate everything hostile before it eliminates you. The level design mixes claustrophobic corridors with increasingly elaborate arenas, while the arsenal gives you increasingly satisfying ways to solve the problem. Fast movement and aggressive combat make every encounter feel immediate, even decades after its original release. The fourth episode adds a tougher challenge for experienced players, so newcomers may discover that their confidence was slightly premature. The Ultimate Doom remains a landmark first-person shooter because it understands something many later games forgot: sometimes all you need is a shotgun, a terrifying noise behind you and a strong suspicion that things are about to get worse.
