Worms takes the basic concept of turn-based artillery and replaces the soldiers with tiny worms carrying an almost irresponsible quantity of weaponry. The result is one of those games that looks ridiculous right up until a carefully planned shot destroys half the landscape and sends an opponent flying. Each team takes turns moving, aiming and firing across destructible terrain, with weapons ranging from conventional explosives to wonderfully silly inventions. Wind, angles and terrain all matter, but so does improvisation, because plans have a habit of disappearing the moment someone launches a banana-shaped projectile. The humour is never far away, yet the mechanics are surprisingly deep. Whether played seriously or with friends shouting increasingly questionable tactical advice, Worms remains a superb example of chaotic multiplayer design.
