Released in 1993, Seven Cities of Gold (Commemorative Edition) invited players to explore the New World with a mixture of discovery, strategy and occasional greed. Sailing into unknown territory carried a genuine sense of adventure, while interactions with native populations required careful decisions. Treasure hunting remained exciting, although many expeditions ended with embarrassing shortages of supplies. The game encouraged experimentation and rewarded curiosity in ways that felt refreshing. There was always another coastline to investigate or another rumor to pursue. Even today, its open-ended approach and historical atmosphere make it easy to understand why players became captivated by the promise of untold riches.
