R-Type is a 1989 shoot 'em up that brings the relentless arcade action of the famous space shooter to DOS. Players pilot a small spacecraft through hostile environments packed with enemy formations, mechanical monstrosities, and enough projectiles to make a sensible person turn around immediately. The distinctive Force pod can be attached to the ship or launched independently, giving players an extra weapon and a useful defensive tool. Power-ups gradually turn the modest spacecraft into a much more dangerous machine, although surviving long enough to enjoy that firepower is another matter. R-Type is brutally demanding, but its tight controls and memorable enemy designs make every successful section feel earned.
