If Frontier: Elite 2 opened the door to a vast universe, Frontier: First Encounters in 1995 basically kicked it wide open and invited you to wander in. This sequel expands the formula with a loose narrative, better graphics, and enough technical ambition to make even modern open-world games nod respectfully. You still pilot your ship through a realistically simulated galaxy, hauling cargo, taking risky missions, or occasionally wondering why the police are suddenly chasing you. The planetary landings are particularly memorable, partly because they look impressive and partly because landing safely feels like a small personal triumph. Sure, the game launched with its fair share of bugs, but there’s something admirable about a title that tries to simulate an entire universe and mostly succeeds.
