Paragon Software

Paragon never became a household name like MicroProse or Origin Systems, but during the late 1980s and early 1990s it quietly produced some surprisingly ambitious PC games. Founded in 1985 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, Paragon was a small studio that punched above its weight, especially when it came to licensed games.

What made Paragon interesting was its mix of comic-book action and hardcore simulation. On one hand, they developed Marvel titles such as The Amazing Spider-Man and Captain America in Dr. Doom's Revenge! and The Punisher. On the other, they worked on deep science-fiction and military RPGs like MegaTraveller: The Zhodani Conspiracy and Twilight: 2000. That combination was unusual at the time: one month you might be punching Doctor Doom, the next you were managing starship crews and reading pages of in-game text.

Their games weren't always polished, and some felt a little rough around the edges even by contemporary standards. Yet Paragon had a knack for taking niche tabletop or comic-book licenses seriously. The MegaTraveller games, for example, remain cult favorites among fans of old-school computer RPGs because they tried to capture the complexity of the tabletop universe rather than simplifying it.

In 1992, the studio was acquired by MicroProse and effectively disappeared as an independent company. Their final release, XF5700 Mantis Experimental Fighter, arrived under the MicroProse label. Several former Paragon staff later moved on to other ventures, and the company faded into gaming history.
