Blue Byte Software was one of Germany’s most influential PC game studios, especially if you like classic strategy, simulation, or DOS-era games. Founded in 1988 in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany, by Thomas Hertzler and Lothar Schmitt, it became famous for deep, systems-heavy strategy games during the MS-DOS and early Windows era.
Its biggest claim to fame is probably the legendary series The Settlers (called Die Siedler in Germany), which mixed city-building, logistics, economy and tiny worker animations in a way that felt weirdly alive for the time. Instead of simply “build barracks → make army,” you had woodcutters, carriers, bakers and miners all physically transporting goods around the map. If you enjoy simulation depth and old-school strategy, Blue Byte fingerprints are everywhere in that design.
Some of their notable games and series:
- The Settlersc medieval logistics/settlement strategy; the studio’s defining franchise.
- Battle Isle: hex-based military strategy, very beloved in German PC gaming circles.
- History Line: 1914-1918: a WWI-themed strategy title related to the Battle Isle lineage.
- Great Courts (aka Pro Tennis Tour): one of their first releases.
- Later involvement with the Anno 1800 / Anno line through Ubisoft’s German studios structure.
In 2001, Blue Byte was acquired by Ubisoft, which wanted its strong PC strategy expertise and franchises like The Settlers. At the time, Blue Byte had around 60 employees and operations in Germany, the UK, and the US.
