Game company profile: Synapse Software
Synapse Software was a pioneering American game developer and publisher founded in 1981 by Ihor Wolosenko and Ken Grant. Based in California, it quickly became known for its high-quality titles on the Atari 8-bit computers, pushing technical limits with fast, colorful graphics and innovative gameplay. Synapse published hits like Shamus, Blue Max, and Alley Cat, which earned it a reputation for creativity and polish. Later, it ventured into experimental projects, including the BTZ interactive fiction engine. Despite its acclaim, Synapse struggled financially and was acquired by Broderbund in 1984, after which its distinctive identity gradually faded.
